Computer Vision Syndrome(CVS)

CVS or computer vision syndrome is a condition of eyes that results from continuous focusing on computer screen or other devices like a tablet ot cellphone, especially for uninterrupted periods of time .

SYMPTOMS:

Asa result eye muscles are unable to rest and stay strained resulting in the following symptoms.

Headache

Eye strain

Double vision

Difficulty in focusing

Vertigo

Neck pain

Irritation in eyes/Dry eyes

RISK FACTORS:

Risk factors that aggravate these problems leading to asthenopic(eye strain) signs are.

Uninterrupted exposure to screen for long hours

Poor sleep cycle.

Improper lightening conditions(very bright overhead light or bright blue spectrum backlights)

Air flow towards eyes causing tear film dryness

With age symptoms tend to get worse for the same amount of exposure to risk factors ,due to the reducing capacity of muscles to withstand strain.

THERAPY:

  • Proper sleep is the most important and first step in relieving the symptoms.
  • Follow 20–20–20 rule.
  • Manage screen light ,keep it in mid range and apply blue filters to help reduce bright blue spectrum light and use dark themes at night.
  • Consciously blink eyes to help tear film distribute over the eye.
  • Use preservative free lubricant eye drops to help improve dry eyes and irritation.
  • Macular supplements having lutein, zeaxanthine, mesozeaxanthine also help in reducing CVS symptoms.
  • Tinted glasses and lenses also help.

The prevalence of this problem in a study shows the symptoms in up to 89% people in USA spending 8 hours in front of computer screen.BUT keeping above mentioned points in mind can help reduce the symptoms significantly.
